Shopify Rollouts: Launch Your First A/B Test at Zero Cost
Shopify has recently released one of its most conversion-focused updates yet: Rollouts.

Why Rollouts Matter

Rollouts enable users to trial a new homepage layout, a different checkout and accounts configuration, such as new call-to-action copy or an upsell block, on a slice of your visitors first, rather than betting the whole store on it.

For years, testing anything on Shopify, even a simple headline change, meant installing a third-party app before you could start. Rollouts removes that barrier. You can try your first test, or a quick seasonal launch, natively and without extra setup.

That makes it a very good entry point, especially if you've never run a structured test before and want to see what a controlled release feels like.

Rollouts is built for a specific job. It's not a replacement for a proper testing programme, and Shopify itself positions it that way. There's no way to test across multiple pages or funnel steps at once, no audience segmentation beyond markets, and no statistical significance reporting to tell you when a result is actually reliable rather than noise.

How Rollouts Work

A Rollout can be as small as a single change, like new call-to-action copy in the checkout, or as large as a full theme replacement, though you can only add one theme change and one checkout and accounts change to a given rollout. Shopify automatically creates a working copy of your live theme or configuration, so you can keep trading and editing normally while a test runs.

You control what percentage of visitors see the change, and you can pause or end a test early. Once a Rollout's changes are applied permanently, though, they can't be reverted, so it's worth reviewing results properly before committing. Because it runs server-side, there's no flicker and no impact on load speed, which matters for both conversion and SEO.

Rollouts also only work with Shopify's own online store checkout. If you're running a headless or custom storefront checkout, it isn't supported. Scheduling changes is included on any plan, but running an actual A/B experiment with results reporting needs the Grow plan or higher.

What Rollouts doesn't do is decide what's worth testing, or tell you why a result happened. That's still the part that takes experience: knowing where visitors are dropping off, which changes are likely to move the needle, and how to read a result properly once the test has run. For that level of rigour, and for testing that spans more than a single theme or checkout change at a time, a dedicated testing platform, run as part of a structured CRO programme, is still the right call.
